This image was painted live on stage at the "Big Worship Night" at Grace- The Church on the Mount in Netcong, NJ on Sun. 9.27.2009. I arrived that Sunday afternoon from CT, built the 3 by 4 foot canvas, set up to paint with the worship band, and had NO IDEA what I was going to do. I sat through the worship rehearsal asking for God's direction, and I came across Hebrews 13:21 as the scheduled benediction on the order of worship sheet:
"may he [Jesus Christ] equip you with all you need
for doing his will.
May he produce in you,
through the power of Jesus Christ,
every good thing that is pleasing to him.
All glory to him forever and ever! Amen."
I took great comfort in the promise that this artistic worship was not about me, but about Jesus, and HIM producing through me whatever He wants... I let go of expectation. That evening after the first worship set, Segun got up and shared about Zacchaeaus and how Jesus came right up to him and called him OUT of his insecurities (down from the tree) to dine with him. My act of worship painting was the same decision to abandon my insecurities ("I'm standing in front of hundreds of strangers and I don't know what I am painting!") and choosing to "dine with"/ enjoy the company of Christ! My choice to paint Zacchaeaus was truly autobiographic now that I am looking back at the experience. All glory to God, who "produced in me, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him." May you also find the freedom to express your love for God through all the talents He gave you and unique ways you are designed!
